Understanding and Treating Irritated Eyes
Common causes of irritated eyes
One of the most common reasons for office visits at Iowa Eye Center is irritated or dry eyes. Symptoms often include a scratchy sensation, irritation, or blurry vision, which may worsen as the day progresses. Proper diagnosis and treatment begin with a comprehensive eye exam to determine the underlying cause of the irritation.
Dry eye syndrome
If your eyes feel increasingly uncomfortable as the day goes on, you may be experiencing dry eye syndrome. This occurs when your eyes do not produce enough moisture to stay properly lubricated. It can cause dryness, redness, and blurred vision. Treatment often involves using lubricating eye drops, also known as artificial tears, which can provide relief and help your eyes maintain proper moisture levels. In more severe cases, additional therapies like prescription eye drops or punctal plugs may be recommended to manage chronic dry eye.
Blepharitis (inflamed eyelid)
If you wake up with blurry vision or notice a gritty feeling in your eyes in the morning, you might be suffering from blepharitis. This condition is caused by blocked oil glands in the eyelids, leading to inflammation and insufficient lubrication. Symptoms include redness, irritation, and even crusting at the base of the eyelashes. Treatment typically involves applying warm compresses to the eyelids and using lubricating eye drops. In more advanced cases, an antibiotic ointment or eye drops may be necessary to reduce inflammation and prevent infection.
Allergies
If your symptoms are more seasonal or related to environmental changes, you may be dealing with allergic conjunctivitis. Allergies can cause itching, tearing, and redness, often triggered by pollen, pet dander, or other allergens. Treatment may involve taking antihistamine eye drops or oral medications, available either over-the-counter or by prescription, to help alleviate symptoms. Avoiding allergens and keeping your home environment clean can also reduce flare-ups.
