LASIK is a popular and effective elective surgery for correcting nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. It provides an alternative to wearing eyeglasses or contact lenses. Using a two-step laser technique, the procedure reshapes the cornea to improve focus.

As with all elective procedures, we encourage patients to research their options before scheduling an appointment. You can find a list of commonly asked questions answered here, but we’d like to dive a bit deeper into what exactly this procedure is, and how it helps patients see clearer.

What is LASIK surgery: Dr. Privett explains

Who is a good candidate for LASIK?

Generally, patients who benefit the most from LASIK have up to -11 diopters of nearsightedness, up to +1 diopters of farsightedness, or up to 5 diopters of astigmatism.

Other requirements for LASIK surgery include:

  • 18 years or older
  • Stable vision that has not undergone significant change in the past year
  • Healthy eyes and corneas
  • No pre-existing corneal abnormalities or diseases
  • Not pregnant or nursing
  • No extremely dry eyes
  • Not a keloid former

If you’re unsure of your qualifications, we encourage you to schedule a free screening with one of our Refractive Surgery Coordinators by calling (319) 362-3937.

Why LASIK is better at Iowa Eye Center

Does my Health Savings Plan cover LASIK?

Most insurance companies consider LASIK an elective surgery, so it is often not fully covered. However, some vision insurance companies may offer a discount. CareCredit could also be an option for a payment plan. We’re happy to work with you to find the best way to achieve your vision correction goals.

LASIK is generally covered by a Health Savings Account (HSA) or a Flexible Spending Account (FSA). You can see the complete FSA eligibility list here; however,  we always recommend contacting your provider for complete guidelines.

Feel free to call us at 319-362-3937 to learn more about payment or financing options.
